“Oh, my word! You guys should have seen Larissa today,” Marie gushed with all the pride of a proud parent. I wasn’t really sure why though, and why she cheered every time either Lisa or I made a correct read. Yes, those reads were impressive to us because we knew what it meant, but I had to imagine from the outside it was a rather boring show. Two girls sitting there with their eyes closed, calling out various claims waiting to find out if we were correct or not. I imagined she would be more awestruck by balls of fire flying across the land at one another, or something appearing from nothing. I made a note to show her some of that one day. That would give her something to truly gush over.

“Did she set a dresser on fire?” mocked Apryl. “You know she did that once. Remember that Larissa?”

“Oh, I remember. I remember, but at least I didn’t set you on fire.”

Apryl responded with a single and loud, “Ha!”

The rest of the room basically ignored me, and at the moment, I was okay with that. I didn’t need or want, to be the center of attention. That occurred far too often for my liking already, no fault of my own. And, if Marie planned to continue to retell our adventures of the day, she would have to do it without me. I had important and already once delayed plans, but first I had to kill two birds with one stone.

I walked over to Laura, who did her best to look around me until I blocked her view of the television. Behind me, I was sure there was some old movie playing. These seemed to be a source of fascination and bonding for Jen and Laura.

“Can you watch Amy for a bit? At least until Stan or Steve come to get her.” I could have asked Lisa, Jack, or one of the werewolves to do this, but I remembered how the episode the other night with Nathan stung her.

“That won’t mess up your perfect little family?” she asked. The question about knocked me over. I was trying to be nice.

“Laura, what’s wrong?” I asked. Not really wanting to get into it in the middle of everyone, but she opened that door. I wasn’t about to just shut it and lock away whatever issue she had behind it. It needed to come out.

“Nothing,” she spat, and then held out her arms. “Amy, come sit with us. You’ll like these flying monkeys.”

Amy hesitated for a moment and held her place next to Lisa. Laura took notice, frowned, and then looked straight up at me with a lot of venom. I ignored her. We needed to hash out whatever this was, but I didn’t have time now. This had to wait. “Amy, why don’t you sit with Laura and watch this movie before dinner is ready?”

Lisa urged her forward. “Go on. I’m going to go help Jack cook. Hopefully it will be edible tonight.
